We are delighted to announce that Dr Fernando Macário, Diaverum’s Chief Medical Officer, has been recognised for his role as Honorary Member of the Portuguese Transplantation Society (Sociedade Portuguesa Transplantação - SPT), during the plenary session of the Luso-Brazilian Transplantation Congress (Congresso Luso Brasileiro De Transplantação).
Held between 1-3 December in Cascais, Portugal, the Congress, which this year celebrated its 20th anniversary, is a major event that sees nephrologists and renal care representatives from Portugal and Brazil come together for discussions on clinical, digital and scientific research strategies regarding transplantation.
During the event, Dr Macário received the respective diploma and trophy for his role as Honorary Member, in a session presided by the Portuguese Health Minister, Dr Manuel Pizarro. It is only the tenth such recognition bestowed by the SPT in 35 years, making it an especially prestigious honour. Dr Macario joined the select group earlier this year, as a result of his outstanding contributions as organiser of the National Transplantation Registry and by serving during two terms as President of the SPT.
During the ceremony, Dr Cristina Jorge, President of the SPT, said: “Dr Fernando Macário has played a fundamental role in the consolidation of our Society’s donor registry. Whilst president of the SPT, he promoted the discussion of ’hot topics’ and raised awareness about transplantation among healthcare authorities and professionals as well as the general public. The SPT is profoundly grateful for the part he has played in raising public awareness about transplantation and in elevating our role as a medical association in Portuguese society”.
From his side, Dr Macário commented: “It has been a wonderful honour to be named Honorary Member of the SPT”.
“Transplantation remains the best treatment option for those living with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and so I consider it my professional duty to advocate for transplantation. It has been one of my career’s great privileges to connect with my peers in this mission, and I look forward to continuing on this fulfilling and purposeful journey”.
