Members of Diaverum's Executive Leadership Team and Diaverum Portugal recently participated in a key nephrological event in Lisbon.

On 8 March, the XXIV Symposium on Nephrology (XXIV Simpósio De Atualização Em Nefrologia) brought together renal care experts from the Lusophone world. Organised by the Nephrology Department of Hospital de Santa Cruz (Serviço de Nefrologia do Hospital de Santa Cruz – CHLO), the symposium provided a platform for professionals to discuss the latest advancements and share insights in nephrology, with a particular focus on transplantation. This year’s event was particularly significant, as it coincided with the 40th anniversary of Hospital de Santa Cruz’s pioneering kidney transplant programme, which began with the hospital's first transplant in 1985, making its historical contributions a key backdrop to the symposium.

Dr Fernando Macário, Diaverum's CMO, had the privilege of co-moderating a thought-provoking roundtable discussion titled “Kidney Transplantation: Where Are We?”, alongside Dr. Susana Sampaio, Clinical Director at Diaverum Portugal’s Braga Clinic. The session offered valuable insights into the evolution and current state of kidney transplantation, underscoring the critical role of transplantation in renal care. The discussion also emphasised the need for continued innovation and greater access to ensure long-term success and improved patient outcomes. The roundtable featured two distinguished experts in the field:

  • Dr. Medina Pestana, from Hospital do Rim in São Paulo, Brazil, presented a compelling perspective on the history, present-day challenges, and future of kidney transplantation, highlighting global advancements and the road ahead
  • Dr. Cristina Jorge, President of the Portuguese Society of Transplantation (Sociedade Portuguesa de Transplantação), provided an in-depth analysis of the kidney transplantation landscape in Portugal, addressing significant progress, policy impacts, and areas for further development.

In addition to participating in the symposium’s events, Diaverum was also a proud sponsor, supporting vital conversations around transplantation as a critical quality indicator of their patient-centric CKD 5 care. By empowering patients to live fulfilling lives and improve their long-term health outcomes, Diaverum remains committed to ensuring access to transplantation for eligible individuals. Sponsoring this symposium aligns with the organisation’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness, nurture innovation, and enhance access to transplantation, all for the benefit of their patients worldwide.

Speaking about the event, Fernando remarked: “Participating in this symposium was an invaluable opportunity to engage with such esteemed colleagues. The discussions on kidney transplantation highlighted the importance of collaboration and innovation in advancing patient care. At Diaverum, we remain committed to improving access to transplantation and driving progress in nephrology. We look forward to continuing these important conversations and encourage our colleagues to reach out for further insights on how we can collectively enhance the lives of CKD patients worldwide.”

Sofia Correia de Barros, Country Manager for Diaverum Portugal, added: “Sponsoring this Symposium is an opportunity to reinforce our True care culture and service as the focus is on the best quality of care we can give to our patients in the long run, and that is for sure to maximise their probability to receive a transplant. Personally, I am very proud to have so many Diaverum Portugal team members participating actively in this Symposium. It is a great recognition of our team’s high contribution to Portuguese Nephrology!”
