Diaverum, together with M42, spearheaded pivotal discussions on AI and its transformative impact on healthcare, at the second Círculo de la Sanidad International Conference.
Organised by Círculo de la Sanidad, a prominent Spanish organisation that brings together healthcare leaders, industry experts, and policymakers to discuss healthcare innovation and related issues, the event ran under the theme “Innovation and development: the Spanish health system in the world”, and was held across two days (27 - 28 February) in Madrid. It attracted high-profile speakers, from both Spain and international markets, including government officials and leaders in healthcare innovation & policy.
Entitled “Artificial Intelligence in public-private collaboration to improve healthcare service management", Diaverum’s panel discussion explored how AI is transforming healthcare by enhancing efficiency, improving patient outcomes, and optimising medical processes. Moderated by Joanna Borczak, Director of Global Marketing, Branding & Digital Channels at Diaverum, the session featured the following experts: Dr. Carlos Lucas, Corporate Medical Director for Protocols and Standardisation at Diaverum; Albarah Elkhani, Senior Vice President of Operations at M42, and head of the Omics Centre of Excellence, one of the world’s largest genomics laboratories; and Dr. Maaz Shaikh, Vice President of Product Management at M42 Health.
The discussion covered the significant challenges of integrating AI into both public and private healthcare systems, which include the need for robust infrastructure, regulatory adaptation, and the upskilling of healthcare professionals. Focused on AI’s current role in healthcare, the conversation delved into the barriers to broader adoption, such as data privacy concerns and resistance to change within traditional healthcare structures. At the same time, the panel explored opportunities for Spain to leverage AI-driven public-private partnerships to enhance nationwide healthcare services and covered the following areas:
- The advantages of AI: how AI has been implemented across regional health systems, highlighting the critical role and benefits of strong collaboration between technology companies, healthcare providers, & governments
- AI’s impact on patients, healthcare professionals, and public health: focusing on AI-driven solutions with an aim to improve patient outcomes, reducing administrative burdens, & enhancing diagnostics

The future perspective of AI in the health industry: addressing significant global gaps in AI-driven healthcare
José María Ordóñez Martí-Aguilar, Country Managing Director for Diaverum Spain, said: “With 49 clinics in its portfolio, Spain is Diaverum’s largest European market, and plays a key strategic role within its global network. This session underscored the pivotal role that Diaverum, in collaboration with M42, can play in shaping AI-driven healthcare solutions on an international scale”.
Albarah Elkhani added: “Círculo de la Sanidad explored the role AI can play in public-private healthcare collaboration. At M42, we are showing how technology and AI can positively disrupt traditional healthcare models to create more sustainable health ecosystems, shift care from sickness to prevention, and accelerate access to help eradicate global health inequities. To achieve this ambition, AI-driven public-private collaborations are vital. In collaboration with our partners, M42 is unlocking the potential of tech and talent, transforming healthcare delivery and improving patient outcomes on a global scale.”
On his part, Dr. Maaz Shaikh noted: “The AI revolution is unfolding at an unprecedented pace, but significant gaps and disparities exist in AI-driven healthcare globally, such as AI regulation, talent development and responsible adoption of AI and next generation technology. Plugging these gaps is essential to scale AI-driven healthcare solutions to address pain points in healthcare and tackle global health challenges. Collaborating with forward-thinking organisations who share our commitment to leveraging AI and technology for improved healthcare outcomes ensures that the path to solving these challenges is a collective effort. Together, we have the opportunity to drive meaningful transformation and create healthier populations on a global scale.”
Dr. Carlos Lucas added: “It was a great honour for me to participate in the panel discussion at Círculo de la Sanidad, where I had the opportunity to share, exchange, and collaborate on thought-provoking points of discussion with my esteemed peers and colleagues. At Diaverum, we are providing world-class, standardised, and personalised care to patients worldwide by integrating digital health solutions, and are already witnessing the positive impact these can have on patient outcomes.
