Diaverum Albania participated in the first Renal Expert Academy, bringing together leading nephrology experts, policymakers and healthcare professionals to exchange knowledge and advance renal care in the country.

Held in the capital city of Tirana, the Academy served as a platform for collaboration across the renal care ecosystem, with participation from clinical experts, academic institutions and international stakeholders, including representatives from Karolinska University Hospital and other leading organisations in the field.

The programme focused on three key areas: policy making, care provision and translational research. Discussions addressed patient-centred and prevention-focused models of care, the role of clinical guidelines and quality registries, advancements in kidney transplantation, and the growing importance of precision medicine in renal care.

Diaverum was represented by members of its executive leadership team, Albania country management and nephrologists. VP Medical, Dr Carlos Lucas, contributed to a panel discussion on digitalisation, quality of care and patient experience in renal care delivery.

Commenting on the event, Dr Lucas said: “Healthcare transformation requires a continuous focus on improving clinical quality, strengthening care pathways, embracing digital innovation, and ensuring that patients remain at the centre of healthcare delivery. These elements are essential not only for delivering consistent and high-quality renal care, but also for supporting the long-term sustainability and resilience of healthcare systems.”

Viorel Simion, Vice President for Eastern Europe, added: “Prevention of chronic kidney disease, alongside strong collaboration between healthcare stakeholders, plays an important role in strengthening healthcare systems and improving patient access to care. Continuous improvement in quality indicators remains a key focus across the region.”

Klodian Shehi, Country Director for Diaverum Albania, concluded: “This Academy created an important opportunity to bring together key stakeholders and leading experts to exchange knowledge and perspectives on the future of renal care in Albania. Strengthening collaboration across the healthcare ecosystem is essential to ensure sustainable, high-quality and patient-centred care.”

Diaverum Albania’s participation reflects its ongoing commitment to contributing to professional dialogue and knowledge-sharing initiatives that support the development of renal care systems. The Academy marked an important step in fostering collaboration between clinical experts, institutions and healthcare stakeholders working to improve outcomes for patients with chronic kidney disease.

Since entering Albania in 2019, Diaverum has established itself as a leading provider of renal care in the country, operating five clinics with more than 140 employees caring for over 530 patients nationwide.
